An investor deck people remember after the meeting

An investor may see several presentations in a day. The deck that is remembered is rarely the one with the most slides or the boldest claims. It is the one whose argument can be repeated to a colleague the next morning.

Two decks, not one

Most decks try to do two jobs at once: support a conversation in the room, and explain everything to someone reading alone later. The result is slides too dense to present and too thin to read. Separate them. A presenting deck carries one idea per slide in a few words. A reading version, or a short memo, carries the detail.

Make the argument visible

  • Start with the conclusion. What you do, for whom and why now, on the first page.
  • One message per slide. Write it as the slide title, as a sentence rather than a label.
  • One chart style. The same colours, the same axes and the same way of highlighting what matters, on every chart.
  • Numbers that match. Figures in the deck, the fact sheet and the data room must agree, to the decimal.
  • Risks, plainly stated. Experienced investors look for them. Naming them first builds credibility.

Let the design carry the memory

A single visual idea, used consistently across the deck, the fact sheet, the annual letter and the data room, helps investors recognise the firm before they read a word. It also makes every document look as if it came from the same careful organisation, which is what investors are really assessing.

Investors forget slides. They remember a clear argument and a firm that looked organised.

Ask someone who was in your last meeting to describe your fund in two sentences. If they cannot, the deck needs work. Before the next meeting, make sure every claim in it has passed your compliance review.
