Character before arrival: where a guest first meets your hotel
Long before the lobby, a guest has already met the hotel: in a search result, on a phone, in a friend’s message. Those first moments decide more than most brands plan for.

The first arrival is no longer the door
Ask a guest how they chose where to stay, and the answer rarely starts with the hotel’s own website. It starts with a friend’s photograph, a line in an article, a pin on a map, an answer from an AI assistant or a listing on a booking site. By the time they reach your site, they are checking, not discovering.
That changes the brand’s job. It is no longer enough for the identity to look right on a sign or a key card. It has to hold together across a dozen small encounters the hotel does not control, and arrive at the website with the same character.
Five places to look first
- Search results. Search for the hotel by name and by what it offers, in each language you sell to. Read the titles and descriptions as a guest would. Are they yours, or written by someone else?
- Map listings. The photographs, opening hours and categories in a map listing are seen by more people than most pages of the website. Add your own photographs, so guests’ uploads are not the only ones.
- AI answers. Ask an assistant the questions a guest would: a quiet hotel in a particular place, a terrace for dinner, somewhere for a family in August. Note whether the hotel appears, and how it is described.
- The phone. Open the website on a phone with a weak connection. The first screen, the speed and the path to the booking engine are the arrival for most guests.
- The confirmation email. The first message after booking is read closely and often forwarded. It is usually the least designed thing a hotel sends.
What to fix, and in what order
Start with what is wrong, then what is missing, then what could be better. A wrong address in a listing costs more than a dated typeface.
Then make the website the place where the character is clearest: photography of the place as guests use it, copy that says the particular thing, and a booking path as easy as the large booking sites.
Character before arrival is not a slogan. It is a checklist, and most of it can be done in a season.
