Direct bookings: what a hotel website must do better than the platforms
Booking platforms are fast, familiar and certain. A hotel’s own website cannot beat them at that game, so it has to play a different one: knowledge, character and a direct line to the people who run the place.

Why guests book elsewhere
Many guests who book through a platform have already visited the hotel’s own website. They leave for ordinary reasons: the price was not clear, the rooms were hard to compare, the booking engine felt like a different company, or a question went unanswered. None of these is about the brand. All of them can be fixed.
A platform offers speed, certainty and a login the guest already has. The hotel’s website cannot outdo that. What it can offer is everything the platform does not know: which rooms catch the morning sun, when the terrace is quiet, who will be at the door to greet the guest.
Six things to get right
- Show the price early. Put a rate from and a date picker on every room page, not only on the home page. A guest who has to start a booking to see a price will check a platform instead.
- Make rooms easy to compare. The same facts in the same order for every room: size, view, bed, bath, light and who it suits. A floor plan, and photographs of that room rather than the one next door.
- Say what booking direct gives. State it plainly beside the price: flexible cancellation, breakfast, a later check-out, a better room when one is free. Promise only what reception will honour.
- Close the gap to the booking engine. Most engines can carry the hotel’s typefaces, colours and photographs. The step from website to booking should feel like turning a page, not walking into another shop.
- Answer questions before they are asked. Parking, children, dogs, transfers, accessibility, restaurant hours. A short, honest list on the page saves an email and keeps the guest on the site.
- Offer a person. A named reservations contact, a telephone that is answered, a messaging channel the team actually uses. For a longer stay or a whole villa, a conversation is the direct channel.
Speed is part of the welcome
Most hotel websites are opened on a phone, often on a slow connection and often abroad. Heavy video and oversized images on the first screen lose guests before they have seen anything. Open the site on a mid-range phone using mobile data; if the first screen takes more than a few seconds, start there.
Let the platforms work for you
Platforms are a shop window, not an enemy. Keep the photographs and descriptions there consistent with the website, so that a guest who discovers the hotel on a platform and then searches for its name finds the same place, with more reasons to book directly.
The aim is not to leave the platforms. It is to make the hotel’s own website the most complete and most helpful place to book.
